Compassion & Caring In Holland!

Jan van Beelen, D.C.

The famous Gandhi saying is ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’ and recently I have met so many people who are literally being the change and Holland is no different.

I have been here just four days and I have come upon a chiropractor that wants to be that change. Having come from the States I have heard so many people say that ‘No one helps us when we need them too’ but I am here to say to you ‘Open your eyes’ because there are plenty of people out there in the world who help us. Just because our news likes to report negativity and doom and gloom doesn’t mean that that is what is actually out there all the time. That’s just what sells unfortunately. I can’t for the life of me understand why but it just is but what I can tell you is that there are wonderful people all over the world who want to help us when we need the help.

There is a local chiropractor in Holland named Jan van Beelen who is making a difference. Upon hearing about the devastation that Hurricane Sandy caused he decided that something needed to be done to help and he wrote a letter to everyone on the DCF (Dutch Chiropractic Federation) for support. Below is his letter:

“Hi Everybody,

What would America do if somewhere in the world a disaster such as Sandy happened? I know. There would be massive aid. What do we do here in Holland? As far as I know nothing.

Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi and others are having a benefit concert. That solidified my determination to do something to help also.

My entire lifestyle, my passion, and my purpose I thank America for. So on Thursday, November 22nd I will work for free in my practice and every euro will be for whatever organization in America that I think needs it the most. Maybe the ICA may know a fellow chiropractor in the coastal area of New Jersey that has lost everything due to the storm. Or maybe the Red Cross needs money. It doesn’t matter as long as I do something.

I invite you to do something similar. You may have ideas that can propel this project into something greater than an individual action. Why the 22nd of November? That’s Thanksgiving in America. To me always the greatest family holiday.

I personally dodged the bullet with this storm. As an investment I own an oceanfront home on the Outerbanks of North Carolina together with some friends and family. The house is under contract to sell on November 30th. Last year Hurricane Irene hit the Outerbanks hard and this year Sandy did major damage where my house is. My house survived intact though.

They have always given to others (otherwise I may be speaking German now). If you have any suggestions how to maximize our efforts or how you plan on raising money then call, email or visit me. On Saturday, November 10th at 1 p.m. I will be hosting a lunch for whomever wants to help. Please let me know if you plan on coming so I can plan the seafood buffet accordingly.

Yours in Chiropractic,

Jan van Beelen, D.C.”

I was so deeply touched that this individual so far from where the devastation is happening would care enough to actually do something about it that I contacted him for his permission to tell his story and he agreed.

Dr. Beelen stated that he worked as a chiropractor on the Outerbanks between 1981-1993 and because of this experience it has made him acutely aware of the damage to people’s lives and property in the event of a hurricane. He also said that his family has been lucky so far and it’s heartbreaking to him to see the havoc in New Jersey and New York right now.

Dr. Beelen also stated that he found it shocking that so many people (100+) lost their lives because of Hurricane Sandy because he really didn’t think that it was going to be that bad. I think a lot of us thought that way too. I mean after all it was only a category 1 storm. Usually that doesn’t do anything really but the conditions were right and everything lined up for a major disaster.

So here’s my call to action to all of you. If you want to help and you’re in Holland then by all means please go to Dr. Beelen’s office in Katwijk, Holland on the 22nd of November and get your spine checked out. You’ll be doing yourself some good (because let’s face it we all need a chiropractor these days) and you’ll be helping so many in America too. It’s a win-win situation. CLICK HERE to go to Dr. Beelen’s website.

If you’re not in Holland and can’t see Dr. Beelen then please donate some other way. If you’re in the area affected then help someone else that’s worse off than you are. If you’re not in the affected area than donate some money to the organization of your choice or volunteer your time and energy in some way to help out.

If you would like to donate to the American Red Cross then you can CLICK HERE to do that too. The cool thing about donating via that link is that for every dollar that you donate your money will be matched dollar for dollar. So if you donate $100 it will actually be $200! Sounds like a great deal to me!

Help Long Islanders Recover From Hurricane Sandy!

If you want to donate more locally then I was also just made aware of The Great South Bay Brewery Hurricane Relief Donation Hub. This is a local pub that is collecting donations of items as well as money to be directly distributed to local people on Long Island, NY that need help. CLICK HERE TO DONATE DIRECTLY TO PEOPLE ON LONG ISLAND!

Please note that you can either mail in your donations to the address on the above webpage OR you can directly donate using the PayPal button at the bottom of the page OR you can CLICK HERE TO GO DIRECTLY TO PAYPAL TO DONATE!

So dear friends, family and blog followers – go forth and be the change! Go make a positive difference in the world! Let’s show the world that there’s more good in this world than negative! I’ll keep you updated on Dr. Beelen’s progress to in a future post!

A little reminder for us all!
